- BELGRADE: The "Food Bank - Belgrade" has announced aid for the most vulnerable persons in Serbia for Easter, when the Bank will supply with foodstuffs the soup-kitchen in Smederevo and the Special Youth and Children Institute "Dr Nikola Sumenkovic" in Stamnica, thus feeding a total of 1.165 persons.
"The soup-kitchen in Smederevo opened in 1999 and various humanitarian organizations supported it at the beginning, but in the recent years we could only rely on local donors and the Government. The donors have been exhausted, and Smederevo has lots of people in need of help - lots of refugees and Roma", said Radica Stankovic, manager of the Red Cross and the soup-kitchen in Smederevo.
The "Food Bank - Belgrade" quotes the Statistics Department of the Republic of Serbia, that 20% of Serbia's population is destitute and that 10% lives below the poverty line. The categories affected by starvation the most are children, old people, disabled persons, refugees and IDPs, and the Roma. People over 65 years of age make up 1/4 of the destitute population and children make up 12,7%.
According to the 2003 statistics, the most destitute region in Serbia is the southeast where 23,5% of the population is poor, followed by the western part of Serbia - 13,2% and the eastern part - 11,4%. The city of Belgrade is the region with the lowest percentage of destitute population - 4,2%.
The soup-kitchens in Belgrade prepare 7.000 meals for the most vulnerable every day.
